The problem of infrastructure

The keyword "innovative infrastructure" in SmartCities leads to the great challenge that digitalization processes and the Internet of Things face: Without a good infrastructure that can be effectively created using the latest technology (e.g. fiber optic cables), it is hardly possible to connect the analogue and virtual worlds. Because without a functioning Internet connection, there is no Internet of Things!

However, the fiber optic expansion required for this in Germany is stalling and is not only endangering international competition, but also preventing innovations such as the IoT from functioning ! Germany seems to be more than unprepared for a digital future: it is hard to find a powerful telecommunications infrastructure in Germany, as the country ranks 20th in the EU in terms of fiber optic expansion. Germany's ranking is even more shocking in a global comparison: At 59th place out of a total of 63 nations assessed, it performs far worse than countries such as Bulgaria, Romania and Kazakhstan.

Given these results, it is understandable that the former head of the mobile phone provider "E-Plus", Dr. Horst Lennertz, is clear in his opinion that Germany is in the process of missing out on the digital revolution. Fiber optic expansion and digitization should actually be of political interest, as they are also in the public interest. Therefore, Dr. Lennertz, who is now a member of the DVTM eV (German Association for Telecommunications and Media), represents the interests of companies that are demanding the long overdue digital revolution for themselves and their employees.
