We used email marketing for ecommerce and learned valuable lessons that will be useful for every business owner and marketer. Here is our story.
In 2011, a few friends and I had a simple idea. We wanted to help people drink great wine at an affordable price.
We were a small group of friends trying to build careers while living in California. We had young children, a new mortgage, and the costs of trying to survive in California. At the end of the day, there wasn’t much money left over to buy a few bottles of fine wine each month.
So, we decided to create a site to help people drink great wine at affordable prices. However, we are not just looking to make money.
In addition to making money, we also wanted to do afghanistan phone number list good in the process. So, we wanted this business to have a purpose. We thought – “wouldn’t it be cool if we could make a difference and offer wine at an affordable price?!?”. That’s when we came up with the idea of donating clean drinking water for every bottle of wine sold.
At the time, there were some great companies doing similar things in other industries. For example, Tom's Shoes donates a pair of shoes for every pair sold. That was an inspiration to us, so we decided to do it ourselves when we started this business.
So, we partnered with Charity Water and found a way to donate clean drinking water for every bottle of wine sold. We’re excited about our potential to make a difference while helping people drink better wine.
The next thing we needed was a name. In hindsight, we probably could have come up with a better name, but we named it CellarThief.
You see Thief is a tool used by winemakers to take samples of wine from barrels during the winemaking process. We thought it was a cool play on words since we also try to offer great wines at “cheap” prices.
We had a concept and started executing it
