The first step in creating SEO-friendly content is to understand the search intent of a keyword.
What exactly is search intent?
Search intent is the reason why someone searches for a particular keyword .
For example, let's take the keyword "organic dog food".
Do users who use it want to buy something (commercial intent)? Are they list of french consumer email looking for information (informational intent)? Or maybe they want to go to organicdogtreats.com (navigational intent)?
Why is it important to establish the intent of a search?
Because Google can understand whether or not your site meets the user's intent.
If yes, you will get a ranking boost. If not, you will have a hard time ranking on the first page of Google.
So, before you write a single word, you need to know whether the searcher wants to see informative and educational content or commercial pages (products, categories or services).
There are a couple of ways to find out:
The first one is the most time-consuming: go to the SERPs and analyze the pages that rank in the top 10 positions.
This also helps you understand what people searching for that term actually want.
Or you can use Semrush’s “Intent” metric to help you automatically determine the intent of that term.
