Complicated and expensive
Ivan Korotkikh noted that it is very difficult to adapt Windows solutions to other operating systems, and most often such labor costs are unjustified, since the majority of ordinary PC users own computers based on Windows. "This is especially true for the mass market. Every family has a PC with Windows installed. People are accustomed to the existing software. Retraining the population to use an operating system that is unfamiliar to them is a difficult task. In many situations, it is easier and cheaper for private businesses not to get involved in this," said Ivan Korotkikh.
At the same time, he emphasized that the situation is different in government bodies and state-owned companies, where there are restrictions on the use of foreign software. "The task is different in the public sector, where there are government orders. And efforts will be made in this segment," said the head of the .NET practice at the digital solutions developer Reksoft.
Vladimir Suvorov from Auriga reminded that the transition between platforms requires significant efforts in adapting not only applications, but also infrastructure. "The iran whatsapp resource complexity of adapting Windows-oriented software to Linux depends on the specific application. In some cases, this can be a simple process, and sometimes a more complex one," said Vladimir Suvorov.
Despite the trend, market participants do not see a complete rejection of Windows solutions in the future. "There is a possibility of rejecting Windows products in favor of Linux. However, in practice, there may be a mixed use of licensed, bypassed, and illegal copies of Windows. At present, there is no alternative to switching to Linux in the current conditions," Vladimir Suvorov noted.
Ivan Korotkikh believes that it is not yet possible to completely abandon one or another OS. "In the current reality, it is impossible to completely and painlessly abandon the use of any OS, not just Windows, in all areas without exception," he noted.
Independent expert on IT and telecom markets Vadim Plesskiy is sure that cross-platform compatibility should be built into a software product in advance, since converting Windows applications for Linux is a "vicious practice that does not lead to anything good."
"If a company wants to achieve cross-platform development, then libraries and frameworks that provide this are used, such as QT and Gtk. The application must initially be written using such a framework. If this has not been done, then the application will have to be developed from scratch. However, if this approach is used from the start, then the application for the required platform - Windows, Linux, Mac - can be assembled in literally an hour or two," noted Vadim Plesskiy.
According to him, in the future the Windows solutions market will shrink, while the Linux solutions market will grow, since Microsoft has refused to support Russian users. "In the conditions of the ongoing SVO, Microsoft's return to Russia in the foreseeable future is unlikely. And the process of transition to Linux is inevitable. Whether it will be some Russian version of Linux or Ubuntu, Debian, etc. is a secondary issue. All new applications should be developed taking into account that they will be assembled and function under the Linux OS," the expert believes.
