GeoPark, a company dedicated to the sale and production of unrefined crude oil and gas, began operations in Chile in 2003 and is currently also present in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Peru. With more than 300 employees, the three pillars of the company's business model include explorers, operators and consolidators.
GeoPark grew at a rapid pace, which caused some information management processes to become outdated. In 2013, it went from centralized management in Buenos Aires to decentralized management, with each country beginning to generate its own reports and monitor its management. This led to some limitations, as each country adopted its own definitions and standards. There was no agreed vision of the metrics, making consolidation and comparison between the different countries difficult. There were also differences in the information managed by the accounting and planning areas (budgetary and economic).
In 2014, GeoPark implemented SAP, thereby improving the quality and robustness of its processes and information management. However, consolidation remained problematic.
In 2015, a regional information analysis team was formed with kenya number data members from planning and accounting to solve these problems. All the metrics and parameters for the analysis were defined together and a foundation was laid for setting up a Business Intelligence platform.
From there, the search for BI tools began, evaluating different alternatives. It was Collaborative, a provider of QlikView and Partner of Data IQ (Master Reseller of Qlik), who approached GeoPark and presented the platform that would ultimately be chosen.
The pre-sale was carried out by Collaborative with the help of its commercial manager, Martin Crespo, who conveyed to the GeoPark team the differentials of Qlik in terms of development capabilities and information analysis without limitations.
GeoPark team members participated in application design workshops and saw the tool in action, which allowed them to make a decision without the need for a PoC (Proof of Concept).
The initial project duration, which involved the development of the EBIT-DA and Production Analysis applications, was only 3 months at the end of 2015.
For the implementation, the GeoPark team outlined a strategic project prioritizing different phases. The first of these was the most important and had to meet the following objectives:
Streamline the process of generating and analyzing information.
Allow greater control of expenses in budget management.
Ensure a single repository of standardized information with shared definitions.
Reduce reporting times.
The initial stage of the project included two dashboards: the first one for EBIT-DA, which with a more general scope allows for a cost analysis by country with a high level of detail, and the second one, more operational, to monitor costs with a lower level of detail.
Currently, 15 users from different countries use these dashboards with different levels of rank in the organization. The EBIT-DA dashboard is the one that continues to be used in full to be able to report in all countries on a monthly basis. In the second dashboard, work is being done to expand the scope of reporting.
Ignacio Mazariegos, Corporate Business Performance Manager, said: “We conducted a two-day training for a group of five people. In-house developments were generated, given the easy handling of the tool. This helped the group to use QlikView and they are very satisfied with the results.” He also added that “currently we are working on developing QlikView in accounting statements for financial consolidation.”
Quantifiable data on the benefits achieved with QlikView
An estimated 5 days of operational savings are estimated in the issuance of the monthly report.
According to Mazariegos: "Taking into account the time and considering that seven people worked on the monthly report, having hours to devote to other tasks, the payback would be in 18 months with a return rate of 90%. It is paid in a year and a half."
