1 How this business model works
Today, the most common way digital publications make money is through advertising – a traditional business model (whether in the form of banner ads or sponsored articles). Other outlets, seeking to maintain editorial independence, have opted for monthly subscriptions. But why pay for an entire publication when, at most, we nurses email list will only read a couple of articles?
A few years ago, the appearance of iTunes meant a radical change in the business model of the music industry for two reasons: first, the business logic changed from paying for an album to paying per song; second, and most surprisingly, despite the existence of piracy sites, there was still interest in paying to obtain music. Something similar happened with Netflix.
People will always be willing to pay for quality content
“Just as you wouldn’t buy an album if you only like one track, why would you buy an entire newspaper if you’re only interested in reading one article, or at most one section?” The same logic that gave birth to iTunes is being applied to journalism with Blendle . This startup from Holland recently brought together all the articles from all the major newspapers and magazines in its country into a web application, with a single paywall , where users will only have to pay for the articles they read . While this is not the first time that this business model has been proposed in the journalistic field, nor is it the first company to implement it, it will be the first time that this model is applied in conventional media, and that undoubtedly represents a great advance.
In a recent post , Blendle co-founder Alexander Klöpping stated:
[…] the music business has taught us that consumers want a simple way to pay for content. As a consumer, you only want to pay for the content you actually consume, you want algorithms and social media to help you filter, and you want everything in one place. While consumers have changed, newspapers and magazines have not adapted.
