The demands placed on data governance leaders have increased over the past few years: increasing volumes of data stored across edge, on-premises and cloud environments; business users demanding self-service data access models; and stricter regulations such as GDPR increasing accountability and urgency. Add to this the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic, and existing governance approaches have been challenged almost overnight, with many organisations forced to rethink their processes amid lockdowns and remote working. This has put data governance under extreme pressure.

Given that AI and ML are hot areas in the economy overall, they could provide executives and IT departments with a wealth of opportunities to improve operations in the future. 23% of IT executives believe that file management and organization is one of the best applications for AI and ML, and 24% believe that these technologies are best suited for identifying and protecting sensitive data in files.

To prepare for the digital work of the future, organizations need to assess current and potential governance risks and identify gaps in their processes and technologies. While some companies are planning to return to pre-pandemic ways of working as soon as possible, others are considering moving employees to remote or hybrid work as a permanent solution. Regardless of the situation, the day-to-day realities and risks associated with data management have evolved significantly over the past 18 months, so much so that standard processes that existed before COVID may no longer be usable.
