How Google is Deciding Your Local Intent for You
Rob Bucci
In August 2017, Google reported that local searches without the “near me” modifier had increased by 150 percent and that searchers were starting to drop geo-modifiers — like zip codes and neighborhoods — from local queries entirely. But does Google still know what searchers are looking for?

For example: The query [best breakfast places] suggests that quality is a top priority. [breakfast places near me] indicates that proximity is important. And [breakfast places in Seattle] seems to benin number data a net across the city. While [breakfast places] is largely vague.

By comparing non-geographically modified keywords modified with qualifiers like “near me” and “in [city name]” and “best,” we hope to understand how Google interprets different levels of local intent and uncover patterns in the types of SERPs produced.

With a better understanding of the behavior of local SERPs, SEOs can refine keyword lists, tailor content, and create targeted campaigns accordingly.
