Similar to Instagram, you can access a large part of TikTok's content in a limited form via a web browser on your computer, for example at this link to the Discover section. Historical window
The application itself does not have a particularly long history. It appeared on the market in 2016 and its origins can be found in China. Its predecessor was Musical.ly. The name was therefore somewhat less universal (it is not exactly the easiest to expand when you have “music” in the name, which is why the creators probably resorted to renaming it – it is nothing that we would not encounter on the Czech market, for example, let's think of Notino and its original name Parfums.cz).
