1. European and International Human Rights Standards in Conflicts and Disasters Course: Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies. The first edition of the Intensive Course ‘European and International Human Rights Standards in Conflicts and Disasters’ (EIHRSCaD), will take place in Pisa on 8 – 12 July 2024. Applications are now open, with deadlines on 15 May (1st round) and 12 June (2nd round). The Course, organized in the framework of a Jean Monnet Chair, will focus on the role of human rights in the prevention and response to natural and technological disasters, and armed conflicts, with a view to promoting a more human rights-sensitive approach to humanitarian assistance in these settings. The Course is intended for graduate and post-graduate students, research fellows and other academics, as well as practitioners working in humanitarian assistance or for national and international organizations, NGOs and other actors active in this field. 2. BIICL Training Programme: Spring 2024. The British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) has launched its programme of short courses for spring 2024. The programme is now accepting bookings and will cover public international law, climate change law, international trade law and the context of the war in Ukraine. Additional courses, including the vnpay database autumn programme of courses will also be available to book shortly. Each course is convened and taught by experts from BIICL’s own team in collaboration with external partners, combining academic expertise with practical experience in these fields of law. 3. Call for Papers: Symposium on Climate Change and Migration. This Symposium will be held on 2 May 2024 at Trinity College Dublin’s School of Law (Long Room Hub). The symposium aims to develop a nuanced and multidisciplinary perspective on such legal issues. Situated in a broader context of climate justice, the symposium will bring together scholars across disciplines, including law, geography, political science and sociology. 4. Ukraine Beyond Aggression: Legal Responses to Russia’s Invasion in 2022 and its Consequences. On 21 February 2024; 14:00 – 17:30 (GMT), the Human Rights Law Centre and the Nottingham Centre for International Law and Security will host a conference showcasing a broad range of research related to Russia’s war against Ukraine examined within the framework of international law. As we approach the two-year mark since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, this event presents an opportune moment for critical reflection on the role and efficacy of international law in addressing this conflict. A keynote address will be given by Judge Mykola Gnatovskyy, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights in respect of Ukraine, followed by a presentation from Maksym Demydenko of the Ukraine War Archive. There will also be presentations from a range of speakers on various topics related to the conflict, including its historical roots, the ongoing refugee crisis, purported justifications for the war, civilian harm and international humanitarian law, international responses to the conflict, accountability efforts, legal responsibility, and more.
