In theory, the concept of target audience is well defined: target audience is the market segment to be reached with your communication efforts.

In practice, sometimes the story is different: the target audience is defined using little research or simply by intuition. It is almost a given.

Naturally, this target audience is made up of a group of people, larger or smaller, but whose consumer profile aligns with the products or services that a given company places on the market.

No brand sells all its products to everyone. Not even the most historic ones.

There are always those who prefer a pair of Adidas sneakers to a pair of Nike sneakers or an Iced Tea to a Coca-Cola. They do so for a variety of reasons, from personal taste to purchasing power.

Every now and then, a basic lesson for the target audience goes viral again : the comparison between King Charles III of England and the world-famous singer Ozzy Osborne.

As you can imagine, these two people probably lead completely different lifestyles. Therefore, it seems that, in terms of target audience, it would be impossible to put them both in the same bag. But is that really the case?

When the target audience is defined based on intuition and with little research, it is usually also defined by what we call basic information.

For example, when you define a target audience by their age or location and sometimes even by their interests. Is this enough to define a target audience? Not really!

Let's go back to King Charles III and Ozzy Osborne.

Both were born in 1948. Both grew up in England.
Both were married twice and both were parents to two children.
They are both rich and considered successful people.
They both like dogs and both have the habit of spending their holidays in the Alps.
Now...do you really think they are both part of the same target audience?

For companies to be able to sell their products, they need to communicate with their target audience in an honest and coherent way.

This involves studying it, getting to know it, identifying with it, understanding its problems, speaking its language and presenting its solutions.

Therefore, before moving forward with any communication strategy, you need to identify the group of people – the target audience – with whom your company will interact and speak. In other words, you need to find a group of people who share some essential characteristics but, above all, share the same type of challenges or problems for which you have the solution.
