Statistics on Mexico's digital situation in 2020-2021

The number of Internet users in the world is increasing progressively every year, as confirmed by the new Digital 2021 Global Overview Report published by We are Social and Hootsuite.

In this article we explore the digital situation in Mexico from January 2020 to January 2021 : trends, user perspectives, social media usage, the e-commerce landscape, and new consumer habits that have emerged, specifically, due to the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic.


The general state of mobile, Internet and social media use

Mexico currently has 129 million inhabitants, of which 80.9% live in taiwan phone number urban areas.

The number of connected mobile devices in the country is 115.4 million, which represents 89.1% of the population. Unlike Colombia , for example, where connected devices exceed the total number of inhabitants (119%).

Mexico has 92.01 million people connected to the internet and 100 million active profiles on social networks. This means that some users have more than one profile per social network.

In 2021, the Mexican population grew by 1% compared to the previous year, incorporating 1.3 million new people.

Mexico has lost 407,000 connections, which represents a 0.4% decrease in mobile device connections. However, the percentage of Internet users rose by 4%, adding 3.5 million new users.

The highest percentage of Mexican digital growth is in the use of social networks, with an increase of 12.4%, which represents 11 million new active users on networks such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.

Devices most used by Internet users

In Mexico, Internet users between 16 and 64 years of age use various mobile devices. Percentage-wise, these are classified as:

Cell phones (any type): 98.9%.
Smartphones: 98.7%.
Mobile phones without “smart” features: 11.4%.
Laptops and/or desktop computers (PC): 74.2%.
Tablets: 48%.
Smart TVs for watching online content (like Netflix): 24%.
Video game consoles: 48.3%.
Smart Home Devices: 12.2%.
Smart watches: 22.6%.
Virtual reality devices: 6.3%.
Almost all devices show an increase in the number of users compared to the previous year, except: laptops and computers (used by 76% last year), mobile phones without smart features (used by 13% of users) and tablets (used by 50% of users).

Average time spent on digital platforms and devices

The time that Mexicans spend per day connecting to different platforms or devices is spent in the following way:

9 hours and 01 minutes connected to the Internet (almost one hour more than in 2019).
4 hours and 01 minutes watching TV (broadcast or streaming)
3 hours and 27 minutes using social networks.
1 hour and 34 minutes reading news (online or in print media).
2 hours and 16 minutes listening to music through streaming services.
58 minutes listening to the radio.
56 minutes listening to podcasts.
1 hour and 36 minutes a day playing console video games.
