google bert
Google announced the BERT update to its algorithm last week, what it called the most significant update in five years , following the RankBrain update in 2015.
According to the release, Google says that BERT will impact 10% of queries, meaning that Google will be able to better understand one in ten queries, similar to how humans understand them. With this update, Google is paying more attention to the context of the search and each word in the search query.
The technology behind this new update is a neural network-based uae phone number data for natural language processing (NLP) called “Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers,” or BERT.
The Google BERT update was officially announced on October 25, 2019 , but Google reported that it had already been rolling out for a few days. Google first talked about the BERT update last year.
Transformers are one of the latest advances in machine learning. They work great for data and are a useful tool for working with natural language processing and search queries. The technique involves teaching systems to correctly understand the context and order in which a word appears.
And this BERT update also marks the first time Google has used its latest Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) chips to deliver search results.
BERT is the most important Google update after RankBrain
According to Google, this new update will affect complicated search queries that depend on the search context.
This is what Pandu Nayak, Google's vice president of search had to say about the new update:
“At Google's core, Search is understanding the language we use. And by applying BERT models to both rankings and featured snippets in search, we're able to understand and do a much better job helping everyone find useful information in their search results. When it comes to ranking search results, BERT will help search better understand 1 in 10 searches in the US in English.
Particularly for longer, more conversational queries, or searches where prepositions like “for” and “to” matter a lot to the meaning, Search will be able to understand the context of the words in your query. And as a result, you can search in a way that feels natural for you.”
BERT is the biggest breakthrough in the last five years and one of the biggest in the history of search, it delivers better results, says Pandu Nayak, and it can help computers understand human language better, or possibly as well as humans do.
What is the Google BERT update?
The new update focuses on better interpreting the intent of search queries.
Rather than looking at a user's search query word by word, BERT allows Google to better interpret the entire sentence to give the searcher more accurate results, just like humans interpret a sentence.
Even sparse changes or even simple words in a search query can significantly alter search intent . However, the update will not be used for 100% of searches . For now, this update will be used on 1 in 10 search results in the United States in English .
According to Google, BERT is a very complex update that pushes the limits of Google's hardware , which is probably why it is only used for a limited number of searches.
The Effects of Google BERT on SERPs
Google presented some examples in its official announcement :
Example 1
In their example, it is a search for “Does a Brazilian need a visa to travel to the United States?”. To understand the meaning of this search, it is essential to understand the word “to” and its relationship to other words in the search query. Until recently, we would have encountered results that were crude or irrelevant. This is because Google would not have taken into account the linking words such as “need” and especially “towards”, perhaps showing inverse and opposite results, such as sites that explain to American citizens whether a visa is required to visit Brazil.
